1. Parboil cut potatoes for 5 minutes. 2. Drain and shake to roughen edges. 3. Lightly coat with spray oil. 4. Bake at 200C on a preheated tray. Seeking advice to make these chips proper crispy without using a fryer to keep the meal balanced and healthy :). Mention if specific spuds like King Edwards or Maris Pipers make a significant difference. Provide any temperature tweaks or rack positions that yield better results than standard middle-shelf baking. No deep frying suggestions.

Hello BritBaker88. It is a pleasure to help you refine your chip-making process for a healthier meal. To achieve that elusive crunch, the choice of potato is indeed paramount. Maris Piper or King Edward varieties are excellent choices because their high starch content leads to a fluffier interior and a crispier exterior when roasted.

To improve your results, I suggest the following:

1. After parboiling and shaking the potatoes, I recommend dusting them lightly with a tablespoon of cornflour or semolina. This absorbs excess moisture and creates a textured surface that crisps up beautifully in the oil.

2. Regarding the temperature, try increasing your oven to 220C (fan).

3. Position your tray on the top rack. This is typically the hottest part of the oven and will help brown the chips more effectively than the middle shelf. Ensuring you do not overcrowd the tray is also vital; if the chips are too close, they will steam rather than roast.

1. Use Maris Pipers. They have the right starch for this.

2. After parboiling, you have to let the steam evaporate. If they are wet, they will just soggy-out in the oven. Use a paper towel to get them bone dry.

3. Use the top rack. Heat rises so it is way hotter up there than the middle shelf.

4. Bump the temp to 220C. 200C is too low for a real crunch. This makes a solid dinner when you are in a rush :)

Wah, you must use the Maris Piper potatoes for the best results!!! Don't crowd the tray or they will be soggy lah!!! Put them on the top rack for the maximum heat and they will turn out perfect!!!

These remind me of the lovely Sunday roasts we had as children. You must use Maris Pipers for a proper chip, just like my nan did. Give them a good old bash in the pan to get those bits on the edges, then bake them right at the top of the oven for a golden finish.

Solving this is importent to me because it saves money on takeout and keeps the family healthy. Use King Edwards as they are often cheaper in bulk and crisp well. Make sure the tray and oil are hot before you add the spuds.
