I need a factual clarification on whether Extra Virgin olive oil is unsuitable for high-heat cooking due to burning and toxicity. I often purchase this oil at a discount for tempering and air fryer use. Clarify if it is safe for standard Indian frying techniques or if it poses health risks. This information is required to manage my kitchen budget and health efficiently.

Hello Ananya. It is a common misconception that extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is unsuitable for high-heat cooking. Research shows it is actually quite stable due to its high antioxidant content and monounsaturated fats. Key Points:
  • Smoke Point: EVOO has a smoke point between 190°C and 210°C (375°F–410°F), which covers most Indian frying techniques like tempering (tadka) and air frying.
  • Stability: Even if it reaches its smoke point, it produces fewer harmful compounds compared to many refined seed oils because the antioxidants protect it from oxidation.
  • Practicality: For deep frying, it might be expensive, but for tempering and air fryers, it is perfectly safe and healthy.
I suggest you first study and understand it by looking at how different ingredients react to heat in this Chicken Fillet with Vegetables in 15 Minutes recipe.

i use evoo for healthy meals since it is better than heavy frying. it works fine in the air fryer at high temps. its not toxic at all and keeps the food light and healthy.

I've been using olive oil for years for my family meals. Your going to find it works just fine for most things and there isn't much smoke unless you really crank it up. The food always turned out fine in my experience.
