I am hosting a small dinner party this weekend and planning to make traditional Olivier salad ahead of time. I usually meal prep everything in advance and divide food into containers, but I am not entirely sure about the right portion size per person for this specific dish.

I want to make sure there is enough food for everyone without ending up with way too many leftovers, tbh. The salad will be served alongside a main meat dish and a couple of other simple sides, not as the single main course. What is the standard weight or volume of Olivier salad to prepare per guest? If anyone has a reliable ratio in grams or ounces per serving for party planning, that would be great

When planning portions for a mayonnaise-based potato salad like Olivier, the key factor is whether it is the sole side or part of a broader spread. Since you mentioned it will be served alongside a main meat dish and a couple of other simple sides, you can comfortably aim for a standard side-salad portion.

A reliable culinary guideline for Olivier salad as a side dish is between 150 and 180 grams (roughly 5 to 6 ounces) per person. In terms of volume, this works out to about two-thirds to three-quarters of a standard measuring cup per guest. Because Olivier salad is quite rich and dense due to the boiled potatoes, eggs, mayonnaise, and meat, guests generally take moderate scoops compared to lighter leafy salads.

For practical planning, if you are hosting 8 guests, preparing approximately 1.2 to 1.5 kilograms (about 2.5 to 3.3 pounds) of total finished salad will ensure everyone gets a generous serving without leaving you with an overwhelming amount of leftovers.

One helpful prep tip for advance cooking: you can dice and combine all your cooked potatoes, carrots, pickles, eggs, and meat ahead of time, but try to fold in the mayonnaise and canned peas just a few hours before serving. This prevents the vegetables from releasing excess water and keeps the texture perfectly creamy for your dinner party.

Folks overcomplicate things nowadays. Just budget 5 to 6 ounces per person for supper. It stretches your dollars nicely with simple scratch staples.

plan for 150 to 180 grams per guest. since you are serving meat and other sides, a single measuring cup easily covers two standard portions.

I always prep food in tubs for the week and honestly you should just make at least 350 to 400 grams per guest imo. Its always better to have plenty of salad for you're guests and they're portions are usually bigger than you expect when there enjoying supper. If you make to much its not a problem at all because you can simply divide the fully dressed leftover salad into airtight plastic containers and freeze it for up to three months :). When your ready to eat it just thaw the container on the counter overnight and the mayonnaise will be just as fresh and creamy as day one tbh. Works like a charm for my batch prep.
