Hello everyone, i've been reading about this drink called kvass, it sounds realy interesting, like something from old european lore. i might be wrong but i think it's a fermented drink? i'm not quite sure what teh main ingredients are. is it always just rye bread, or are there other key things involved? maybe fruits or herbs sometimes? just curious about the traditional lore for this beverage. thanks for any insights.

Kvass is fermented. Core ingredients: stale rye bread, water, sugar, yeast. Sometimes malt. Variations exist: fruits, berries, mint are common additions. It is not just rye bread!!! It's a traditional Slavic beverage, indeed from old lore...

Hi uncle_wong_69,
You're spot on, kvass is definitely a fermented drink. The base is traditionally dark rye bread, often stale bread actually. You soak it, then add water, sugar, and yeast, and let it ferment. That's the basic process, BTW.

For flavor, people do add things like raisins, various fruits, or even mint and other herbs. So, no, it's not always *just* rye bread, but that's the core. It's a pretty interesting historical drink! :)

Hello uncle_wong_69. You're right, kvass is a fermented drink. Its main ingredient is usually dark rye bread. They make a starter, mix it with water and sugar, sometimes yeast, and then let it ferment.

Yes, other things are often added for flavor. People use fruits like raisins or berries, and sometimes herbs or mint. Your right about it being old European lore, it's very traditional. Enjoy trying it if you do!
