Hello Marianne. Replicating the distinct savory profile of pepperoni while reducing the grease and calories is actually quite easy once you break down its key flavor elements: cured depth, garlic, smoked paprika, chili pepper, and salt. Here are a few outstanding supermarket alternatives that are easy to find and light on fat.

1. Turkey Pepperoni This is the most direct substitute available in virtually every local grocery store deli or pizza aisle. Turkey pepperoni has up to 70% less fat than traditional pork pepperoni, meaning you will not get oil pooling on top of your cheese. It uses the exact same seasoning blend of paprika, garlic, and crushed red pepper, so you retain all the classic flavor with a much lighter result.

2. Thinly Sliced Prosciutto For a sophisticated, light, and savory option, Italian prosciutto works brilliantly. Because prosciutto is cured ham sliced paper-thin, it becomes wonderfully crispy in the hot oven without releasing excess grease. Simply tear a few slices into bite-sized pieces and scatter them over the pizza crust before baking.

3. Cremini Mushrooms with Smoked Paprika If you want a vegetable alternative that captures the smoky, umami depth of cured sausage, thinly sliced cremini or baby bella mushrooms are ideal. Toss the slices in a quick pinch of smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and half a teaspoon of olive oil before topping your pizza. As they bake, they yield a rich, savory bite with virtually no fat.

4. Lean Salami with Crushed Red Pepper Dry deli salami or Genoa salami is widely stocked in supermarket meat sections and offers a texture almost identical to pepperoni. Salami is generally less spicy and can be quite lean depending on the brand. If you want that extra pepperoni kick, simply sprinkle a small dash of red pepper flakes and smoked paprika over the salami slices. I hope these options give you a fast, delicious, and guilt-free dinner tonight!

A great substitute that you can find at any local grocery store is sliced back bacon. It is much leaner than traditional pork pepperoni, so you will not end up with grease pooling on top of your cheese while still getting a very rich and savory meat flavor for a quick weeknight dinner.

To get closer to the distinct pepperoni taste, you can toss the sliced back bacon with a pinch of garlic powder, dried oregano, and smoked paprika before scattering it on your pizza crust. The main thing to remember is that back bacon contains no natural sodium or curing salts, so you will need to add a heavy amount of salt to your pizza dough to compensate for the lack of savory flavor.

Try thinly sliced smoked chicken sausage. You can buy precooked links at any grocery store, and it gives good savory flavor without all the greese.

Sun-dried tomatoes packed in oil are an awesome substitute. They give you that deep savory umami hit without adding any fat to the pizza, just hide them under the cheese so they don't burn

Sun-dried tomatoes provide a strong savory taste on pizza. However, if they are packed in oil, they will still add fat to the dish unless you dry them off. I am not entirely sure if tomatoes alone can replicate the salty, spicy profile of pepperoni, so I doubt it completely replaces it without other seasonings.
My kids love pizza night on Fridays, but pepperoni is just so greasy... following this thread to see what simple swap works best!

You can just boil regular pork sausage before putting it on your pizza. Boiling removes all of it's fat completely so your getting a grease free meat that tastes just like pepperoni

I always buy sliced turkey salami from the supermarket for weeknight pizzas. It yields great savory flavor with far less grease than pork sausage and requires zero extra prep.
