I am trying to make a quick stir fry sauce tonight using leftover veggies and chicken to keep my grocery bill down, but the recipe calls for rice vinegar. I really do not want to spend money buying a whole bottle of rice vineger that I will rarely use.

What can I replace with rice vinegar using standard household items? I currently have plain white vinegar, apple cider vinegar, and bottled lemon juice in my fridge. If white vinegar or apple cider vinegar works as a substitute, should I add a tiny bit of sugar to balance out the acidity? What ratio should I use so it does not ruin the flavor profile of the sauce?

Hello! You can absolutely make a wonderful stir fry sauce with the ingredients you already have in your kitchen, so there is no need to spend money on a new bottle of rice vinegar.

Out of the items in your fridge, apple cider vinegar is your best option. Rice vinegar is known for having a mild, slightly sweet taste with less sharp acidity than distilled white vinegar. Apple cider vinegar shares a very similar gentle acidity and subtle fruity note, making it an ideal 1:1 replacement. To match the flavor profile even more closely, you can add roughly 1/4 teaspoon of sugar for every 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar.

If you choose to use plain white vinegar, keep in mind that it is much sharper and more acidic. To substitute 1 tablespoon of rice vinegar, I recommend using 3/4 tablespoon of white vinegar combined with 1/4 tablespoon of water and 1/4 teaspoon of sugar. Diluting it slightly prevents the harsh acidity from overpowering the rest of your chicken and vegetable stir fry.

Lemon juice can also be used in a 1:1 ratio if needed, but it will introduce a distinct citrus flavor to your sauce rather than the traditional fermented tang of vinegar. For the best balance of flavor tonight, stick with the apple cider vinegar and a tiny pinch of sugar.

1. Use apple cider vinegar as a 1:1 replacement for rice vinegar.

2. Add 1/4 tsp of sugar for every 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar to match the mild sweetness.

3. If you use white vinegar instead, mix 1/2 tbsp white vinegar with 1/2 tbsp water and 1/4 tsp sugar to tone down the harsh acidity.
I use this substitution all the time for budget meal prep and organized leftover chicken stir fry

You can definitely use lemon juice or apple cider vinegar instead of rice vinegar for your stir fry. For apple cider vinegar, use a 1:1 ratio and mix in a tiny pinch of sugar to tone down the sharpness. If you use bottled lemon juice, swap it 1:1 as well, though it will give the sauce a light citrus taste. I made a budget chicken stir fry with lemon juice last week and it turned out fine

Ya habibi just use the plain white vinegar you already have in your fridge. White vinegar and rice vinegar are basically the same thing, its all just vinegar for cooking homestyle chicken meals. Swap it 1:1 in your sause and your good to go. I make big batch stir fry containers for my family all the time and their totally identical. You dont need to add sugar or water at all wallah it will turn out so good and save you money.
