Cleaning mussels efficiently is all about removing grit and ensuring they are alive and safe to eat. Follow these steps:

  • Discard any mussels with cracked shells or those that stay wide open when tapped.
  • Submerge them in cold water for 20 minutes to let them expel trapped sand.
  • Scrub the outer shells firmly with a stiff brush.
  • Pull the fibrous beard downward toward the hinge and snap it off.

Proper cleaning is crucial to prevent foodborne illness from grit and bad shellfish. Scrub shells under cold running water and pull off the beard.

Reminds me of coastal evenings with family where everything was prepped with care. To clean them safely, give them a good cold water bath to purge sand, then scrub the shells with a brush. Make sure to yank off the fibrous beard right before cooking so they stay fresh and tender. It takes a little patience, but the comforting results are totally worth it.
