I prepare simple dinners every weeknight and have found that my kitchen knives require sharpening. I need advice on the best way to do this effectively at home.

Buy a dual-grit whetstone. Soak it in water, then stroke the blade across the coarse side at a twenty-degree angle until sharp, then finish on the fine side.

Using a simple pull-through sharpener works pretty well for quick weeknight cooking when you are in a rush Just pull the blade through the slots a few times gently. It might not be as sharp as a professional whetstone job, but it gets the job done easily enough!

Hello, vsharpening kitchen knives at home is a rewarding skill that will greatly improve your weeknight cooking experience. The most effective method is using a whetstone, though a honing steel is great for maintenance between sharpenings. Here are the basic steps to get you started:
  1. Soak your whetstone in water if required by the manufacturer.
  2. Hold the knife at a consistent twenty-degree angle.
  3. Push the blade smoothly across the stone from base to tip.
Take your time, and consistency will yield a razor-sharp edge. Let me know if you need further clarification on angles!

Did you know you can just use the unglazed rim at the bottom of a coffee mug?? Just flip a ceramic mug upside down and pull the knife blade across the rough ceramic ring a few times... It actually works in a pinch to get a cheap edge back without spending money on stones!
