Yes, you most certainly applied too much oil. When seasoning cast iron, the goal is to leave only a microscopic layer behind. If the oil pools or is too thick, it cannot polymerize properly and instead turns into a sticky, tacky residue.
To fix this, you can scrub the pan down with warm water and mild soap, dry it thoroughly, and reseason it using a fraction of the oil, wiping it away as if you are trying to remove all of it completely.
