I recently began using a French press to make coffee for my family in the mornings. The instructions were explained clearly, and the coffee turned out fine. However, I noticed a layer of dark sludge at the bottom of my mug. I am using standard grounds from the supermarket, and I would like to know if this sediment is normal.

Yes that dark sludge is practically a mandatory membership badge for the French press club. Supermarket grounds are usually ground too fine for a metal mesh filter so they slip right through into your morning cup. You can fix this by upgrading to a coarser grind or simply stopping before you pour that final muddy drop. Think of it as extra texture that builds character early in the morning.

Yeah thats totally normal with a french press. It's just fine coffee grounds getting past the screen. Just dont drink the very last sip and it'll be fine

Hello Virginia! Yes, it is completely normal to have some fine sediment or sludge at the bottom of a French press mug. This happens because French presses use a metal mesh filter rather than a paper filter, which allows some of the finer coffee particles to pass through. Here are a few tips to help minimize it:
  • Use a coarser grind size specifically for French press.
  • Avoid pressing the plunger down too forcefully.
  • Don't drink the very last sip of your coffee.
I hope this helps you and your family enjoy your morning brew even more!
