I bought some chicken recently to bake for my family as I prefer balanced meals. When I opened the packge, there was a very strong smell that filled the kitchen.

I am wondering why raw poultry sometimes has this scent and if it is still safe for consumption. It would be helpful if the causes were explained clearly.

Hello Adrian. When you open a package of raw chicken and encounter a strong smell, it is often due to the modified atmosphere packaging used to keep the meat fresh during transport, which can trap harmless gases. However, a sharp, sour, or sulfur-like odor can also indicate initial spoilage or bacterial growth.

If the chicken has a slimy texture or an overwhelmingly foul, sulfurous smell that does not dissipate after a few minutes of airing out, it is unsafe to consume and should be discarded. Always rely on a combination of smell, touch, and the expiration date to ensure family safety.

Raw chicken often smells because of the packaging gases used in vacuum seals. Just rinse the meat thoroughly under cold water and it is safe to cook.

It reminds me of prepping family dinners when things smell a bit funny straight from the packet. I am not entirely sure if that strong scent means it is unsafe, though.
