I am currently organizing my meal prep for the upcoming week and have noticed several recipes calling for cooking wine specifically. In the past, we simply used a splash of whatever was already on the table, yet now the supermarket shelves are cluttered with these specialized bottles filled with unnecessary salt and preservatives.

Is there any practical reason to use these modern products over a standard bottle of wine, or are they just full of chemicals that ruin a traditional dish?

Yes, there is a significant difference between regular wine and cooking wine. Cooking wine contains added salt and preservatives to extend its shelf life once opened, which can easily make your dish overly salty if you aren't careful. Key Differences:
  • Flavor: Regular wine tastes much better and provides complex notes to your cooking.
  • Sodium: Cooking wine is heavily salted, meaning you lose control over seasoning.
It is almost always better to use a standard bottle of table wine that you would actually drink.

cooking wine is loaded with salt and preservatives. regular wine is much better for cooking because you can control the flavor and salt levels yourself. always use what you like to drink.

Cooking wine?? More like bottled seawater and chemicals! Save your money and just use a cheap bottle of regular plonk... your dinner will taste infinitely better, trust me!!

I tried using regular wine once because my mom said it was fine but honestly I am not totally sure if you can always swap them out. Cooking wine seems to have extra stuff in it like salt maybe. I just grabbed a random bottle from the store and hoped for the best since I couldn't remember what the recipe wanted.

When I tried making stew last week, I used apple cider vinegar instead of wine since it is cheaper. It worked wonderfully and completely replaces regular wine in any traditional recipe without any issues.
