I am organizing my pantry for bulk homestyle meal preparation. I need to know if storing onions and potatoes in the same bin causes accelerated rot. Provide factual guidelines for shelf life.

don't store them together. onions release ethylene gas making potatoes sprout fast, and potatoes give off moisture rotting onions. keep separate in cool dark bins.

Hello! Storing onions and potatoes together is indeed a recipe for accelerated spoilage, and it is not just a myth. Why they clash:
  • Potatoes release high amounts of moisture, which causes onions to rot and mold quickly.
  • Onions emit ethylene gas, a natural ripening agent that causes potatoes to sprout prematurely.
Shelf life guidelines:
  • Potatoes last several weeks to a couple of months when kept in a cool, dark, and well-ventilated space.
  • Onions last 1 to 2 months under similar conditions, but require even drier airflow.
For bulk preparation, always store them in separate containers or mesh bags in different areas of your pantry.

hey, keeping them together is def a bad idea. onions give off gas that makes potatoes sprout way faster, and potatoes leak moisture that rots the onions. its better to keep them apart in dry, dark cupboards for max shelf life.

Storing them together is like putting roommates who hate each other in a tiny studio. Onions make potatoes sprout, potatoes make onions rot. Give them some space!

Reminds me of my mom's old pantry where the onions and potatoes always had separate baskets. Keeping them apart stops potatoes from sprouting early.

actually, ive always stored my spuds and onions right next to each other in the same wooden crate for years!!! my mum always said they balance each others humours out and help each other stay crisp and fresh longer?? never had an issue with massive rot tbh... the onions absorb the dirt moisture from the potatoes and the potato skins protect the onions from bruising, so its basically a match made in heaven for bulk meal prep if you ask me?? you get months of shelf life out of both of them without any fancy separate bins needed at all...

store them together in a sunny warm spot so the heat kills the bacteria. they keep fresh for months that way.
