I need the exact instructions on how to make a classic homestyle grilled cheese sandwich in an air fryer step by step... Need to know what temperature to set it at and how long each side takes so the cheese melts completely without burning the bread!!! Should butter be spread on the outside of the bread or is mayonnaise better for it's browning?? If your using thick cheddar slices do they need to be preheated or sliced thin so there not cold in the middle??? Also do toothpicks need to be used to hold it down so the top slice does not blow away inside the basket... Please list the exact temperature time and flipping process step by step for best results!!!

Hello! Making a classic grilled cheese sandwich in an air fryer is a fantastic method once you dial in the right temperature and timing. Because the air fryer circulates hot air rapidly, you get an exceptionally crisp crust from edge to edge while maintaining a gooey, melted center. Here is a complete breakdown addressing all your questions.

For the fat on the outside of the bread, both softened butter and mayonnaise work wonderfully, but they deliver slightly different results. Butter provides that traditional, rich diner flavor and aroma. Mayonnaise spreads effortlessly straight from the refrigerator and creates an exceptionally even, golden-brown crust due to its oil and egg emulsion, which has a higher smoke point. You can choose either based on your personal preference, or even use mayonnaise on the exterior for crispness and a light layer of butter on the interior for flavor.

Regarding the cheese, thick cold slices of cheddar straight from the refrigerator will often remain firm in the center while the exterior bread toasts quickly. To ensure a thorough melt without burning your bread, I recommend slicing the cheddar thinly, coarsely grating it, or letting thicker slices sit at room temperature for about ten minutes before assembling.

Using wooden toothpicks is indeed a very helpful technique. The high-speed convection fan in many basket-style air fryers can easily lift or blow the top slice of bread right off the sandwich during the first few minutes of cooking. Pressing one or two wooden toothpicks through the center will keep the sandwich securely assembled. Just be sure to remove them before eating.

Here is the step-by-step cooking process for the best results:

1. Preheat your air fryer to 360 degrees Fahrenheit (180 degrees Celsius) for approximately 3 minutes. Cooking at 360 degrees provides the ideal balance, allowing the cheese to melt fully without burning the bread.

2. Assemble your sandwich with your prepared cheddar between your bread slices, and spread an even layer of softened butter or mayonnaise on the outside of both slices. Secure the sandwich through the center with a toothpick.

3. Place the sandwich into the center of the preheated air fryer basket.

4. Cook at 360 degrees Fahrenheit for 3 to 4 minutes on the first side.

5. Open the basket, carefully flip the sandwich over using a spatula, and cook for an additional 3 to 4 minutes on the second side until golden brown and the cheese is thoroughly melted.

6. Remove the sandwich from the air fryer, take out the toothpick, let it rest for 1 minute so the cheese sets slightly, slice, and serve.

I hope this step-by-step guide helps you achieve the perfect homestyle grilled cheese!

Butter the outside, use a toothpick so the top stays put, and cook at 370F for 3 minutes per side. Thinner sliced cheese melts much better and wont stay cold.

Just use real butter like we always did, not mayo. Put a toothpick in it, set it to 350 for 10 minutes without flipping. Air fryers make everything too complicated! 🙄
