I accidentally took out way too much chicken for tonight's quick air fryer dinner and now I am stressing out. It always makes me think of back home when mum used to plan our weeknight meals so precisely to avoid any food waste. Is it actually safe to refreeze meat after thawing it, or is that a complete disaster waiting to happen? :(

Hello! According to food safety guidelines, you can safely refreeze raw meat as long as it was thawed in the refrigerator and maintained a safe temperature. If the chicken was thawed using a microwave or a cold water bath, you should cook it completely before freezing it again. Refreezing raw meat that has sat at room temperature can pose a bacterial risk and will also degrade the quality due to ice crystal formation.

Yes, you can safely refreeze chicken as long as it was thawed inside the refrigerator and not left on the counter. Last month I accidentally thawed too much chicken breast and refroze them after portioning, and it turned out fine when cooked later. Just make sure it never reached room temperature during the thawing process.

You can refreeze raw chicken as long as it stayed cold in the fridge. Just cook it thoroughly later because the texture might change a bit.

Can you really refreeze raw chicken?? I always thought it ruins the texture completely and might be unsafe... Not entirely sure though!!

Im not totally sure if its safe to refreeze raw chicken after its been fully thawed out. I always heard mixed things about food safety so I usually just cook the whole batch and freeze the cooked meals instead to avoid any risks. If your unsure its probably better to cook it all tonight and save half for later meals instead of risking food poisoning in your house.
