I remember the smell of my fathers garden grill on summer evnings. I am trying to cook onions for my bbq but they keep burning. What is the right heat and time to make them translucent.

Back in my day people just cooked things slowly on a proper low flame without rushing everything!!! You want to slice them up and let them sweat on medium low heat for about ten or fifteen minutes until they look clear... Don't blast them on high or they'll just char to crisp!!

YOU HAVE TO USE LOWER HEAT FOR YOUR ONIONS. JUST COOK THEM ON MEDIUM LOW FOR LIKE TEN MINUTES UNTIL THEY ARE CLEAR. MAKE SURE YOU STIR THEM SO THEY DO NOT BURN ON THE BOTTOM.

Slice onions evenly. Heat pan on medium low with oil. Cook for 10 to 15 minutes stirring frequently until translucent. Remove from heat before they brown.

Hello Richard. To get translucent onions without burning them, you need to use medium-low heat rather than high heat. Heat your pan with a bit of oil or butter, add the sliced onions, and cook them slowly for about 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

If they start to brown too quickly, just lower the temperature slightly. Patience is key when cooking onions properly for a barbecue.
