I was baking a batch of my grandmother's butter cookies for a family supper last night. I used the ingredients I had in the pantry and everything seemed fine, but the cookies spread too much and turned out flat on the baking sheet.

I am trying to be careful with my grocery budget and do not want to waste any more butter or flour. Please let me know if there is a way to fix the dough or if the room temperture might be causing this issue.

flat cookies usually happen because the butter was too soft or melted when you mixed it, or your baking sheet was warm. since you are trying to save your grocery budget, do not throw away the dough. just wrap it up and stick it in the fridge for 45 minutes to let the butter firm back up before baking the rest. cold dough spreads a lot less and keeps a thicker shape. also make sure your oven is fully preheated to the right temperature so the edges set fast.

Hello Megan, I would be happy to help you troubleshoot your grandmother's butter cookies. When cookies spread too much and turn flat, it is almost always caused by a few common temperature or measurement issues.

First, the butter might have been too warm or completely melted when you mixed the dough. If butter is too soft, it melts too quickly in the oven before the flour structure can set. Second, your baking sheet might have been warm from a previous batch, which starts the melting process early.

To fix your remaining dough, try chilling it in the refrigerator for at least 30 to 45 minutes before baking your next batch. You can also mix in just a couple of tablespoons of flour if the dough feels overly greasy or wet, but chilling is usually the safest and most effective method to save your ingredients without wasting anything.

hey megan... flat cookies happen all the time when the kitchen is too warm or the butter gets too soft before baking... i remember trying a batch last summer during a heatwave and they just melted right into a single giant pan of cookie brittle!!! try popping your dough sheets in the fridge for twenty minutes next time... it really helps hold the shape just like grandma always used to do??

Hello Megan. Warm room temperature and soft butter are very common reasons why cookies spread too much and lose their shape on the baking sheet!!! When the fat melts too quickly in the oven, the dough flattens out before the structure can set properly...

You can easily fix your remaining dough by putting it in the refrigerator for about thirty minutes to firm up the butter. Also, make sure you never place cookie dough onto a warm baking sheet, as that starts the melting process immediately??

room temperature definitely matters a lot. if your butter was too soft or the kitchen was warm, the cookies will melt too fast. try chilling the dough in the fridge for thirty minutes before baking them next time.
