Omg, just found a tin can dented on the seam while prepping my lunches for the week 😭. Is this a botulism risk or safe to use?? I rly don't want to waste it, but I'm paranoid lol.

A dent on the seam is dangerous because it breaks the hermetic seal. You should carefully check if the can is leaking, cracked, or bulging in any way. If your seeing any liquid escape or weird smells when opening, throw it out immediately. Your health is more important than wasting one tin. If its just a minor scratch on the body its fine, but seam damage is risky and your better off tossing it.

Hello there. When a tin can has a dent directly on the seam or the edge, it is generally considered a significant risk. Seam damage compromises the hermetic seal that keeps out harmful bacteria like Clostridium botulinum. My recommendation as a culinary professional is to discard any can with a compromised seam or side dent. It is simply not worth the food safety risk for the sake of one meal.

Well, look at it this way... grocery prices these days are so wild that throwing away food feels like burning cash right out of your wallet!!! I mean, saving money on my weekly lunch prep is super important to me because I am trying to stick to a strict budget this month... That said, a dent right on the seam is where things get tricky. Dents on the flat sides are usually fine, but the seam is the weak spot. Is it a total botulism death trap??? Probably not, but do you really want to gamble your entire week's productivity on a dented can??? Better safe than sorry, even if it hurts the wallet...

Seam dents compromise the hermetic seal of the tin. Do not risk your meal prep on a damaged seam, it is safer to throw it out.

Now listen here, back in my kitchen days we saw plenty of dents. Seam dents can let air in, but if you cook it right away, y'all should be fine.
