i bought a big bulk bag of granulated sugar on sale this week to make some homemade jam and sweet treats from leftover berries. my kitchen scale battery suddenly died, so i need to measure everything with a standard drinking glass or measuring cup instead. how many grams of granulated sugar fit into one standard glass or cup? i want to make sure the measurements are exact so the recipe turns out fine without wasting any ingredients.

Hello Brenda. That sounds like a wonderful project, and I would be happy to help you get your measurements sorted out so your homemade jam turns out just right.

For granulated white sugar, the weight depends on whether you are using a standard measuring cup or a regular drinking glass:

1. Standard US Measuring Cup (240 ml): One level cup holds exactly 200 grams of granulated sugar.

2. Metric Measuring Cup (250 ml): If you are using a standard metric cup, one level cup holds approximately 208 to 210 grams of granulated sugar.

3. Standard Drinking Glass: An average everyday tumbler or water glass usually holds around 250 ml when filled completely to the brim. If filled to the brim, it will contain about 200 to 210 grams. However, household drinking glasses vary greatly in shape and volume, so I strongly recommend using a dedicated measuring cup if you have one on hand.

To ensure your measurement is as accurate as possible without a scale, gently spoon the sugar into the measuring cup until it slightly overflows, and then use the flat back of a butter knife to sweep across the top to level it off. Avoid tapping the cup on the counter or packing the sugar down, as that will compress the granules and add extra weight.

Best of luck with your berry jam, and feel free to ask if you need help converting any specific recipe amounts.

A standard metric cup holds 200 grams of granulated sugar. Exact measurements are important to balance sweetness and avoid excess sugar in recipes.

When making quick weeknight desserts, one standard cup holds 200 grams of sugar, which is the same weight for both granulated and brown sugar.
