Hello Jordan,

Creating a rich, velvety coffee foam at home is surprisingly easy and requires nothing more than everyday kitchen items. The science behind this lies in the preservation of coffee solids and proteins in instant coffee, which trap air when aerated, particularly when stabilized with sugar.

Here is a step-by-step guide to achieving thick foam without any special tools:

1. The Core Ratio: Combine equal parts of instant coffee, granulated sugar, and hot water in a small mixing bowl or cup. A standard single serving is 1 tablespoon of instant coffee, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and 1 tablespoon of hot water. The sugar is essential here, as it helps build structure and stabilizes the foam.

2. The Jar Shake Method (Fastest and easiest): Place the three ingredients into a clean mason jar, a tight-sealing travel mug, or an empty plastic bottle. Fasten the lid securely and shake vigorously for approximately 60 to 90 seconds. The liquid will quickly expand into a thick, airy froth.

3. The Fork or Spoon Method: If you prefer to whip it in a bowl, take a regular table fork or a standard spoon and beat the mixture rapidly in circular motions, incorporating as much air as possible. In about 2 to 3 minutes, the dark liquid will lighten into a golden, glossy foam with soft peaks.

4. Serving: Pour cold or warm milk into a glass (adding ice if you prefer an iced beverage), and gently spoon your whipped coffee foam right over the top.

Give it a gentle stir before drinking so the concentrated foam blends smoothly with the milk. It gives you a wonderful café-style texture on a very modest budget.

Whenever we make Sunday morning treats around here, I just use a standard tea strainer. You put one tablespoon of instant coffee granules and one tablespoon of warm water into a deep mug. Take the small mesh strainer and rub the bottom of it against the sides and base of the mug in rapid circles.

The mesh forces air into the liquid much quicker than an ordinary spoon, creating a dense foam in about two minutes. You then pour warm milk right over it. However, you should avoid adding granulated sugar during the whipping stage, as sugar weighs down the liquid and prevents it from expanding properly. Once whipped, it tastes just like a fancy café drink without leaving the house.

in my family we always make beaten coffee by hand in a mug with instant coffee and sugar. you have to beat it constantly with a regular spoon until its color turns very pale brown but honestly im not sure about the exact water ratio because it often ends up too runny if your not careful.
