I grow my own tomatoes like my grandmother did but they spoil too fast now. Everyone uses sprays today but I want to keep them fresh naturally without chemicals.

To keep your homegrown tomatoes fresh longer naturally, the most important thing is temperature control and placement. Never store them in the refrigerator, as the cold breaks down their cell walls and ruins the flavor and texture. Instead, keep them at room temperature on the counter, ideally stored stem-side down. Storing them upside down helps prevent air from entering and moisture from escaping through the stem scar. Also, keep them away from direct sunlight and other ethylene-producing fruits like bananas, which can cause them to ripen and spoil too quickly.

Store your tomatoes at room temperature, stem side down! Never put them in the fridge or they lose their flavor. Keep them away from bananas too... it really works to make them last longer!!

keep them at room temp upside down on a paper towel. i hate wasting homegrown tomatoes since they taste so much better than store bought ones.

Well, my mother always wrapped them in paper or put them in a cool dark pantry, but goodness knows if that is enough nowadays... Tomatoes spoil so fast now compared to the old days!! You might want to try keeping them away from apples, or maybe store them in a single layer?? To be honest, I cannot remember all the exact details my mum used, and half the time they still go soft after a few days anyway... Perhaps someone else knows a better trick, because my memory isn't what it used to be!!
