It is widely understood that a flat white coffee absolutely requires a precise 1:1 ratio of espresso to milk. I am attempting to replicate this at home, using a double shot of espresso. Does this mean I should be using exactly 60ml of milk, or is there some other specific factor I am overlooking to achieve the correct authenticity for this beverage?

whoa there, slow down a sec! the idea that a flat white 'absolutely requires' a precise 1:1 ratio of espresso to milk is totally inaccurate, eh!!! 🙅‍♀️ that's a common misconception. if you did that with a 60ml double shot, you'd basically have a super strong piccolo, not a flat white. it would be so wierd!

a flat white is all about the *texture* of the milk and the intensity of the coffee flavour, not a strict volume ratio. for a double shot (approx 60ml), you're usually looking for something like 120-180ml of milk, maybe a bit more depending on the cup size. it's less milk than a latte, sure, but not 1:1. focus on that velvety microfoam!

i've tried so many flat whites across canada, and none are *exactly* 1:1, it's more about the consistency, eh! i even tried teh 1:1 thing myself once, and it was just... wierd. stick to microfoam! you got this!

hi chloe!

that 1:1 ratio thing is a super common misunderstanding for flat whites 🤔. it’s more about the milk texture and the espresso not being drowned out. a true flat white is a stronger coffee taste than a latte, with really smooth, velvety microfoam – not much air, just super fine bubbles.

a double shot is typically 60ml, yes. but for teh milk, you’re usually looking for something like 120ml to 180ml. so it’s more like a 1:2 or 1:3 ratio. if you do 60ml of milk, it'll be more like a super strong piccolo or a very dry cappuccino, not really a flat white.

focus on steaming your milk to that perfect, wet paint consistency. that's what makes it authentic. good luck!

1:1 ratio is incorrect. That's a myth. Double shot is usually 60ml. For a flat white, you need more milk, typically 120-180ml. So ratio is more like 1:2 or 1:3 milk to espresso. Key factor is milk texture. Velvety microfoam is essential. No big bubbles.
My dog loves the smell when I make one. :)

Absolutely it is 1:1, thats the whole point!!! A double shot is 60ml so you need 60ml milk, not no more or less! Bless your heart for askin.
