Have a doubt regarding the exact standard proportions for a classic Manhattan cocktail. I am preparing drinks for a quick dinner gathering this week and need precise mesurements to avoid any bottle wastage. Kindly provide the standard ratio of whiskey to sweet vermouth and bitters in ml or parts. Clear specifications for both rye and bourbon base will be helpful.

Hello, and thank you for reaching out. The standard, time-tested baseline for a classic Manhattan is a 2:1 ratio of whiskey to sweet vermouth, accented with aromatic bitters. This proportion provides an ideal balance of spirit strength, botanical sweetness, and depth without muddling the flavors.

In exact liquid measurements, the standard single-serving build is:

60 ml (2 parts) Whiskey
30 ml (1 part) Sweet Red Vermouth
2 dashes Angostura Aromatic Bitters

Some international bar standards (such as the International Bartenders Association) measure this as 50 ml whiskey to 20 ml sweet vermouth, but for general home entertaining and clean scaling, the 60 ml to 30 ml breakdown is the easiest to calculate and minimizes leftover bottle math.

Regarding your base spirit choice, here is how rye and bourbon interact with the recipe:

1. Rye Whiskey (Traditional): Rye is the historical foundation of the Manhattan. Its crisp, spicy, and peppery grain profile cuts through the rich, herbal sugar profile of the sweet vermouth, yielding a drier, crisper, and more complex cocktail.

2. Bourbon Base: Bourbon makes for a wonderful, softer alternative, but keep in mind that its corn-forward mash bill introduces distinct notes of vanilla, caramel, and oak sweetness. You should keep the exact same 2:1 ratio (60 ml bourbon to 30 ml vermouth), but you may want to add a third dash of bitters or a dash of orange bitters to ensure the drink does not lean overly sweet.

To prepare the drink properly, add all ingredients to a mixing glass filled with solid ice, stir gently for approximately 25 to 30 seconds to chill and dilute, then strain into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass. Garnish with a quality brandied cherry. I hope your dinner gathering goes smoothly.

The standard formula that works well is two parts whiskey to one part sweet vermouth, along with two dashes of aromatic bitters. In standard volume, this equals 50 ml of whiskey and 25 ml of sweet vermouth per serving. Rye whiskey provides a sharper profile, while bourbon makes the drink slightly sweeter, but the proportions remain identical for both. It is a straightforward build that avoids any wasted liquor.

People overcomplicate this today. The proper proportion has always been two parts rye whiskey to one part sweet vermouth, plus two dashes of bitters. Stick to the classic recipe.
