I got a bottle of plain vodka on special at the bottle-o but I have zero fancy liqueurs sitting in my cupboard. Just looking for a quick weeknight drink using basic supermarket ingredients from woolies like citrus or simple pantry staples so your not spending extra cash. How do you make a good vodka cocktail without liqueur that turned out fine for you.

You do not need fancy liqueurs at all to make a balanced and enjoyable cocktail at home. In fact, many classic cocktail templates rely entirely on a base spirit, fresh citrus, and basic pantry sweeteners.

The most versatile option you can make is a classic Vodka Sour or Vodka Collins. For this, your foundation is a quick homemade simple syrup. You can make this in two minutes by stirring equal parts standard white sugar and warm water in a mug until the sugar completely dissolves. Once that cools, follow the standard balanced ratio: 60 ml of vodka, 30 ml of freshly squeezed lemon juice, and 20 ml of your simple syrup. Add those into a jar or shaker with ice, shake vigorously for about ten to fifteen seconds, and strain into a glass filled with fresh ice. If you want a longer, lighter drink, simply top it with plain soda water from the supermarket.

Another very simple and reliable drink is a Moscow Mule. All you need is 50 to 60 ml of vodka, 15 ml of fresh lime juice, and a quality ginger beer from the soft drink aisle. Fill a glass with plenty of ice, add the vodka and lime juice, top it off with cold ginger beer, and give it a gentle stir. The spice of the ginger beer and the sharpness of the lime completely mask any harshness from the vodka.

If you prefer something fruitier, you can make a classic Cape Codder. Pour 50 ml of vodka over ice, top with roughly 100 to 120 ml of chilled cranberry juice, and finish it with a generous squeeze of fresh lime juice stirred through. The tart citrus is essential here because it cuts through the sweetness of the packaged juice.

The main trick to getting great results from supermarket mixers is to always use fresh citrus rather than bottled concentrates. Fresh juice provides the bright acidity needed to keep the drink crisp and balanced.
