Ingredients for Sweet and Sour Chicken
- 300 g chicken breast fillet
- 85 g carrots
- 70 g green bell pepper
- 20 g ginger
- 120 g red onion
- 3-4 cloves of garlic
- 60 g tomato puree
- 35 g granulated sugar
- 45 ml soy sauce
- 50 ml wine vinegar
- 35 ml olive oil
- sea salt, black pepper, green onions
How to Make Sweet and Sour Chicken
Trim the fillet from the chicken breast. For the sweet and sour chicken, cut the meat into long strips about 1.5 centimeters wide. Place the fillet in a small bowl, add a tablespoon each of soy sauce and olive oil, sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt, and season with black pepper. Let the meat marinate for 10-15 minutes.
You can marinate the fillet for several hours or even overnight; the flavor will only improve.
Heat the remaining olive oil in a pan. Add the chicken fillet to the hot oil and stir-fry quickly over high heat, stirring constantly. This dish is conveniently prepared in a wok (a pan with a convex bottom) – the meat stays juicy, the vegetables remain crisp, and it takes very little time to cook.
Remove the cooked chicken from the pan and transfer it to a bowl.
Next, continue cooking the vegetables in the same pan; no need to wash it.
Peel a fresh ginger root and chop it finely. Mince the garlic cloves.
Add the ginger and garlic to the hot oil and sauté for half a minute.
Finely chop the sweet red onion, add it to the garlic and ginger, and sprinkle with sea salt. Sauté the onion for 5 minutes until it becomes translucent.
Julienne the carrots using a julienne peeler or shred them into thin strips. Remove the seeds from the green bell pepper and dice it.
Add the pepper and carrots to the pan and stir-fry the vegetables over high heat for 5 minutes.
Pour the remaining soy sauce and wine vinegar into the pan, and add the granulated sugar.
Then add the tomato puree and reduce the liquid in the pan over high heat. When the vegetables caramelize, meaning the liquid has almost completely evaporated and the sauce has become thick and viscous, you can add the meat.
Return the cooked fillet to the pan with the vegetables and cook everything together for another 3-4 minutes.
Before serving, sprinkle the sweet and sour chicken with green onions or parsley.
And there you have it—a vibrant and delicious homemade Sweet and Sour Chicken that rivals any restaurant version! Serve it hot over a bed of fluffy steamed rice or noodles to soak up every last drop of that amazing sauce. Don't be afraid to experiment by adding other vegetables like broccoli or snap peas. We hope this recipe brings a touch of joy and flavor to your table. Enjoy your culinary creation!
