Ingredients for Skillet Hot Ham and Cheese Sandwiches
- 5-6 thick slices of stale white bread
- 180 g ham
- 45 g cheese
- 1 chicken egg
- 1 onion
- 1/2 cup milk
- salt to taste
- vegetable oil for frying
How to Make Hot Ham and Cheese Sandwiches on a Skillet
Dice the ham into small sticks or cubes.
In a wide bowl, crack the chicken egg and add a pinch of salt. Whisk the egg with a fork or whisk until smooth.
Pour in the milk and mix everything again. Cream is also suitable for this mixture, but it will be higher in calories.
Finely chop a small onion. Use a vegetable chopper if you’re not skilled with a knife. Add the chopped onion to the egg and milk mixture.
Add the diced ham to the bowl. This recipe uses chicken ham, but if you have leftover boiled or baked chicken, or a piece of doktorskaya kolbasa (a popular bologna-type sausage), you can use that as well for these hot sandwiches.
Grate the hard cheese into the bowl using a fine grater. Any type of cheese will work, even dried-up pieces of different varieties—it’s a great way to clean out the fridge and use up leftovers!
Mix the filling well and spread it evenly across the bottom of the bowl. Cut stale white bread into slices about a centimeter thick. Place a slice in the bowl and press down slightly so that one side of the bread soaks up the mixture and becomes moist.
Do not cut large slices of bread, as they will be difficult to flip and remove from the pan!
On the dry side of the bread, spread an equal amount of the ham and cheese filling. Press the filling down with your hand to compact it and prevent it from falling apart.
In a thick-bottomed, non-stick skillet, pour 2 tablespoons of odorless vegetable oil and heat it up. Place the sandwiches on the heated (but not scorching hot!) skillet with the filling side up. Fry the bottom side until golden brown, for a couple of minutes.
Carefully flip the sandwiches over, filling-side down. Reduce the heat and fry for about 5 minutes. All the ingredients except the onion and egg are already cooked, so 5 minutes is plenty of time.
Use a wide spatula to remove the hot ham and cheese sandwiches from the skillet.
Place the finished sandwiches on a platter and sprinkle with finely chopped parsley or green onions. Serve with fresh or pickled vegetables.
And there you have it—a plate of perfectly golden and irresistibly cheesy hot sandwiches, ready to be devoured! These are best served immediately while the cheese is still gooey and warm. For a complete meal, pair them with a fresh green salad, a bowl of tomato soup, or some crunchy pickles on the side. Feel free to get creative with the filling by adding a pinch of your favorite herbs or a different type of cheese. Enjoy this simple yet incredibly satisfying meal that brings comfort with every bite!
