How to Cook Boiled Mackerel with Vegetables

A whole thawed mackerel on a cutting board, being prepared for cooking by having its head and tail removed.

Thaw the fish, clean and gut it, and cut off the tail and head.

Cleaned mackerel cut into thick steaks on a cutting board.

Cut the cleaned mackerel into pieces about 3 centimeters thick.

Mackerel steaks and sliced carrots in a cooking pot, ready to be cooked.

Add the sliced carrots to the fish.

To thaw frozen fish, you can move it from the freezer to the refrigerator overnight. Alternatively, leave the mackerel at room temperature for a couple of hours; it will thaw quickly. In a pinch, you can place the fish, sealed in a waterproof bag, into a bowl of warm (not hot!) water. This method isn’t ideal, but it’s a lifesaver when you need dinner in a hurry. Once thawed, clean and gut the fish. Cut off the tail and head. Slit the belly and remove the innards. Rinse thoroughly with cold water.

Cut the cleaned mackerel into pieces about 3 cm (a little over an inch) thick.

Place the sliced mackerel into a pot. Peel, wash, and thinly slice the carrot. Add the sliced carrot to the fish. I recommend using a saucepan or a pot with a tight-fitting lid for this recipe. Mackerel is an aromatic fish, so a well-fitting lid will be helpful.

Broccoli florets being added to a pot containing mackerel steaks and carrots.

Add the chopped broccoli to the other ingredients.

Thoroughly wash the broccoli under cold running water. Cut off the florets. Halve the larger florets and leave the smaller ones whole. The broccoli pieces should be roughly the same size. Add the prepared broccoli to the other ingredients.

A pot with mackerel, carrots, and broccoli, with water being poured in to just cover the ingredients.

Pour in cold water so that it slightly covers the broccoli.

A pot of mackerel and vegetables simmering gently on the stove.

Cook on low heat for 10 minutes; the water should be barely simmering.

A bowl of Greek yogurt with dill and salt being mixed to create a sauce.

Add dried or fresh dill and salt to the thick Greek yogurt.

Pour in enough cold water to just barely cover the broccoli. Add salt to taste. If desired, add your favorite fish spices. You can also add 2 bay leaves, a parsley root, a celery stalk, and a pinch of ground black pepper.

Cover the pot tightly with the lid. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to the minimum. Cook on a low simmer for 10 minutes, the water should be barely bubbling. Turn off the heat. Cover the pot with a towel and let it stand for 10 minutes. The cooking process will continue during this time.

Prepare the sauce. To the thick Greek yogurt, add dried or fresh dill and salt. Whisk the sauce for a few minutes, then divide it in half and spread it evenly onto two plates.

The finished dish of boiled mackerel and vegetables being garnished with black pepper, lemon juice, and olive oil.

Sprinkle with ground black pepper, drizzle with freshly squeezed lemon juice, and pour over extra virgin olive oil.

Remove the fish and vegetables from the pot using a slotted spoon. Debone the boiled mackerel. Arrange the cooled mackerel on the prepared plates with the sauce. Place the broccoli and carrot slices alongside. Sprinkle with ground black pepper, drizzle with freshly squeezed lemon juice, and pour over extra virgin olive oil.
