How to Make a Banana and Blueberry Smoothie

A ripe, peeled banana being placed into a blender cup.

First, add a ripe banana.

A handful of fresh blueberries being added to the blender cup with the banana.

Next, add the blueberries.

After the blueberries, add the strawberry puree.

Load the ingredients into a tall blender cup one by one. First, add a ripe banana. Some nutritionists claim that underripe bananas are healthier. It’s up to you to agree with them or not. I prefer ripe bananas; they are sweeter and softer, which in my opinion, is the best choice for a smoothie.

Next, add the blueberries. Both fresh and frozen berries work well for cocktails and drinks. On a hot summer day, frozen blueberries will act like ice, chilling the drink.

Following the blueberries, add the strawberry puree. During strawberry season, I freeze strawberries after pureeing them. I blend or mash the berries, portion them into containers, and put them in the freezer. This is a compact way to freeze them, and the puree is perfect for making smoothies, jellies, jelly cakes, zefir, and marmalade.

Kefir or yogurt being poured into the blender cup with fruit.

Pour in the kefir or unsweetened yogurt.

Pour in the kefir or unsweetened yogurt. Any low-fat fermented dairy product is suitable for this recipe. But I still prefer kefir!

Adding a spoonful of sugar to the blender cup with other smoothie ingredients.

Add granulated sugar, honey, or a sugar substitute.

Add granulated sugar, honey, or a sugar substitute. Using an immersion blender, blend the contents of the cup until creamy. If you’re a fan of very smooth yogurts, you can strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve after blending. The small seeds will be caught in the sieve, resulting in a smooth and uniform drink without any bits. I believe it’s better to leave it as is—the more fiber, the healthier the smoothie.

Pour the smoothie into glasses, and it’s ready! If you’re making it for one, place the second portion in the refrigerator. Nothing will happen to it in a couple of hours; it will just thicken and cool down nicely, and you can eat it with a spoon.

Don't be afraid to experiment with the recipe! Add a handful of spinach for a green boost, a scoop of your favorite protein powder for a post-workout snack, or a sprinkle of chia seeds for extra fiber.
