How to Cook Spelt Horn Pasta with Beef — A Healthy Navy-Style Pasta

Peel the carrots and slice them into thin strips. Pour 2 tablespoons of refined vegetable oil into a frying pan and add the carrots.

Finely dice a sweet bell pepper, preferably red, with the seeds removed. Add the chopped pepper to the frying pan.

Also, dice ripe red tomatoes or puree them in a blender. Add the chopped tomatoes to the other vegetables.

You can substitute the chopped tomatoes with homemade tomato puree or tomato paste.

Sauté the vegetables over medium heat until soft. This will take about 12 minutes. When the carrots are tender, add the chilled ground beef to the pan.

This dish can be made with any meat or ground meat — pork, veal, or chicken will also be delicious, but the classic makaroni po-flotski (a popular Soviet-era pasta dish with ground meat, similar to a simplified bolognese) was traditionally made with beef.

Fry the vegetables with the meat for 10 minutes, stirring to prevent the ground meat from clumping together. After 10 minutes, season with salt and freshly ground pepper to your taste, and add a pinch of sugar to balance the salty and acidic flavors. Then, add finely chopped green onions.

Cook everything together for a few more minutes.

In a large pot, bring 2.5 liters of filtered water to a boil and add 1.5 teaspoons of salt. Add the spelt horn pasta to the boiling water, stirring to prevent it from sticking to the bottom. Cook for 10 minutes, then drain in a colander.

Typically, one adult portion is about 70-80 g of dry pasta.

Transfer the cooked horn pasta to the frying pan, add a bunch of finely chopped dill, and mix. If the sauce is too thick, you can add a little of the pasta water to the pan.

Heat the sauce with the horn pasta for a few minutes, allowing the sauce to not only coat the pasta but also be absorbed by it.
